The soap slips, slips out of your hands, leaves behind a fragrant and iridescent foam, is washed away by the flow of water and disappears without a trace — it, like nothing else, becomes not only a metaphor but also a critique of all aspects of life. The exercise devised by Motolyants is reminiscent both of Erwin Wurm’s cycle of “instant sculptures” with their distinctly anticapitalist pathos and of Zhang Huan’s performance “Add One Meter to the Nameless Mountain,” which is in every respect detached from the world.
Building a vertical structure from various pieces of soap and carefully selected soapshell fragments, carefully matching them in color, while choosing a support point on the forehead, requires a person to have a sense of balance.
