Vertical farms are the heirs of the terraced gardens of the Maikop culture, Soviet projects of multi—storey plant factories and American skyscraper farms. By 2025, vertical farms will become a familiar element of urban infrastructure, and investments in their development will exceed $1 trillion by 2040.

Ivan Karpov's installation is a cross—section of technologies that make it possible to create automated agricultural complexes with closed water circulation, artificial lighting, heating and air conditioning, but at the same time it is an aesthetic concept, an attempt to visualize a new stage of vertical farms — their spread beyond industrial facilities, implantation into the fabric of the city, house, museum. The shape of the garden, resembling a DNA double helix, reflects the idea of an inevitable improvement program, the dialectic of self-unfolding and self-concentration, and ascending life cycles. Spiral is a way of life in an open source digital culture, where each of us is an eternal beginner, and ideas and projects are never completed and ready for updates.
