In the series of graphic works “Good weather in a bad place” Alexander Shishkin-Hokusai creates group portraits in bizarrely distorted spaces. All the characters and landscape forms are deformed in such a way that the viewer is constantly deceived: familiar objects and creatures (not always portraits of people) are not what they seem. Most of the time they remind us of the girls we know from the series.“Flat plywood sculpture” or the project “Growing up practices". However, in the latest series, they transform into a wide range from porcelain dolls to alien chimeras. And in the bad places where they live, you can guess the images of world visual culture: from Japanese prints and the northern Renaissance to a spaceship from an Alien. Reworking images of the culture of the past is a favorite move for the author. His works in the field of contemporary art invariably enter into a dialogue with classical art. And such a wide range of borrowings this time is due to the use of AI by Shishkin-Hokusai.
